Charlemagne began to conquer the former Visigoth states which had been captured by the Muslims or had become allied with them. By 795 AD, Charlemagne had created the Marca Hispanica, a buffer zone between modern day France and Spain to defend the Frankish Kingdom in Northern Europe from Islamic invasions of the Moors.
